WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Roger Bergman surprised his fellow Ottawa County Board members on Tuesday (Dec. 14, 2021).
Near the end of the biweekly business meeting, the last such scheduled session for 2021, the Grand Haven Republican announced that he was stepping down as board chairman, a year ahead of the slated end of his term. Bergman said that a conversation with Vice-chairman Matt Fenske, a Coopersville area Republican, shortly after he began wielding the gavel in 2020 stuck with him.
“Perhaps it made more sense that the chairmanship should be two years rather than three,” Bergman said during the communications portion of the meeting at the Fillmore Street Administration Building. “(Fenske) asked me if I would be willing to step down at the end of 2021 so that he, as well as others in the future, might have more chances to be chair. I agreed to step down with the understanding that, in the future, the chair will serve for two years.”
Bergman and the rest of the board will elect a new chairman at their first scheduled business meeting of the New Year next month.
