John Patnott, who founded the Hope College men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs, has been selected to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America’s list of 100 Greatest College Swimming & Diving Coaches of the past 100 years. He guided the program for 39 seasons before retiring in 2019.
The Greatest Coaches announcement is part of CSCAA’s 100th birthday celebration. Last month, the Flying Dutchmen’s Josh Boss ‘02 was chosen for the 100 Greatest Men’s Swimmers list.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Hope College women’s basketball team picked up the pace on Thursday and kept the longest active winning streak in all of NCAA Basketball going. The top-ranked Flying Dutch raced to a 93-50 victory against Benedictine University (Illinois) at DeVos Fieldhouse. It was Hope’s 53rd consecutive victory, most among any women’s or men’s basketball team in the nation.
Hope College’s Olivia Voskuil was selected as the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week and chosen to the D3hoops.com Women’s Basketball Team of the Week The senior civil engineering major posted back-to-back doubles last week in victories against Calvin University and Aquinas College for the top-ranked Flying Dutchmen.
FOOTBALL
Two members of the MIAA co-champion Hope College football team have claimed all-region honors from D3football.com: right tackle Brady Eding and safety Brady Howe. In Region 4 that includes schools from Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, Howe, pictured, is a second-team selection on defense. The junior is a special education major. Eding, a business and classical studies double major, made the third team on offense.
WOMEN’S TRACK/FIELD
Junior Ana Tucker eclipsed her own Hope College women’s indoor track and field record in the 5,000 meters on Friday at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open. Competing against mostly NCAA Division I and II runners, Tucker clocked a converted time of 17 minutes, 5.30 seconds that topped her previous best by 6.68 seconds. The Flying Dutch finished in the Top 12 in five events at the meet.
MEN’S TRACK/FIELD
The Hope College men’s indoor track and field team recorded five Top 12 performances at the season-opening Grand Valley State University Holiday Open on Friday. The Flying Dutchmen’s 4×400 relay posted an eighth-place finish. Senior David McHugh, senior Drew Dow, junior Nathan Woolum, and senior Nathan Trumble recorded a time of 3 minutes, 23.97 seconds to finish eighth in their event, which featured mostly Division I and II teams. They also were named MIAA Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Hope College men’s basketball team split its games at the Washington University in St. Louis Lopata Classic last week. Sophomore Tanner Wiegerink and the Flying Dutchmen rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half to defeat Hendrix College (Ark.), 75-71 in overtime, on Saturday after losing to the University of St. Thomas (Texas) on Friday, 84-61. Sophomore Noah Hedrick scored five of Hope’s 12 points during the five-minute overtime period. Hope is now 4-3 overall.
The Hope College men’s basketball team will hold its annual team poster giveaway after the Saturday, Dec. 11, home game against vs. fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Tipoff is 3 p.m. Fans can pick up their posters and get autographs on the concourse.
ACHA HOCKEY
The Hope College ice hockey team skated to 3-1 and 6-3 home wins against the University of Notre Dame last weekend in ACHA play at Griff’s IceHouse West. The top-ranked Flying Dutchmen received three goals over two games from junior Kevin Healy, pictured. Hope improved to 16-0 on the season.
