Holland, Michigan – Stephanie W. Krom died peacefully on November 1, 2021, at the age of 95. Stephanie was born to Anna Wendel Wahlers and Dietrich Wahlers on a memorable date, 6/26/26. She grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, and attended Columbia High School. Stephanie received a bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College and went on to work as a Home Economist for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Company in Newburgh, New York. In 1950, she married Donald Templeton Krom and they settled in Poughkeepsie, NY, and raised three children. During her years in Poughkeepsie, Stephanie served many community organizations including the Girl Scouts of America, the Greater Poughkeepsie Meals on Wheels, and the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie, where she was Board President. She enjoyed supporting women through P.E.O. and was an active member of the Reformed Church of America. She moved to Freedom Village in Holland, Michigan in 2008. There, she enjoyed many active years playing bridge with friends, reading books, and entertaining. Stephanie’s college yearbook described her as “mad for sailing and travel,” two interests that she continued to pursue throughout her life. She loved spending summers with family and friends at her lakeside cabin in Maine. She enjoyed many trips abroad, a highlight of which was a cruise around the world on the QE2.
She is survived by her daughter, Dietlind Hoiem of Urbana, IL, her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Marguerite Krom of Rye Brook, NY, and her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Carl Miller of Holland, MI. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years as well as her beloved sister and brother.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 6 at Hope Church, Holland, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie and Kids Hope USA.
