HUDSONVILLE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – An apparent case of drowsy driving led to a single-vehicle crash on Saturday evening (Oct. 16, 2021) in Hudsonville.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jon Smoes, deputies and other first responders were dispatched around 7 PM to Chicago Drive (M-121) east of Balsam drive on a report of a single-vehicle accident. “The investigation at the scene showed that a 64-year-old man from Hudsonville was westbound on Chicago Drive when he fell asleep and drove into the median, striking the ditch face,” Smoes said in a department statement.
A 64-year-old Hudsonville woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids for treatment of what Smoes would only call “non-life threatening injuries.” The driver and another passenger, a four-year-old girl, were not hurt.
Smoes added that the driver was ticketed in the incident. No names of those in the vehicle were disclosed per Sheriff’s Department policy.
