HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — With overdoses continuing to be a public-health scourge, public safety officials have planned a drug take-back day this month.
The event is a partnership with Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office; Holland Hospital; Ottawa County Community Mental Health; the Holland Department of Public Safety; the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA); and the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (OPEN) to host this take-back event.
The drug take-back event is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021. People can drop off over-the-counter medications; liquids; needles; inhalers; and vitamins.
- Drive-through service at Holland Hospital’s main visitor parking lot, 602 Michigan Ave., Holland
- Drive-through service at Spectrum Zeeland’s front parking lot, 8333 Felch St., Zeeland.
- Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, 640 River St., Allegan
Narcan and medication lock boxes will be provided to those who want them.
Hospital officials indicated a similar event in 2019 collected 532 pounds of medication and 30 pounds of needles.
In 2018, there were more deaths from drug overdoses than car crashes, according to Michigan State Police statistics.
When people don’t properly dispose of their medications, they are more likely to be scooped up by the family members or friends with substance-abuse issues.
