ONDERSMA
David Marvin Ondersma, age 79, of Hudsonville, formerly of Holland, passed into the presence of his holy God on October 7, 2021. David was born on March 11, 1942, to Simon and Marion (Swart) Ondersma of Grand Rapids. He attended Grand Rapids Christian High, graduated from Calvin College in 1963 with a degree in economics, and then completed a master’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Michigan. David worked in the banking industry, spending most of his career at First Michigan Bank. He was a member and past president of the Michigan Bankers Association. He was also active in the community as a member of the boards of Metro Hospital and the Grand Rapids Symphony.
On April 23, 1965, he married Nancy Heemstra, and together they raised their family in Grandville and later in Hudsonville. They were devoted members of Georgetown Protestant Reformed Church. David loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them on the shores of Lake Michigan. David and Nancy also enjoyed traveling to new places with Dave planning all the details!
Throughout his life, David joyfully dedicated his time and talent to his LORD and Savior Jesus Christ by willingly serving on school boards, as an elder in his church, and as PRCA synodical treasurer. Humbly and quietly, diligently, and faithfully, he labored for the good of the churches and schools.
David was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Nancy; in-laws: Fred Geers, Kenneth Rietema, Hollis “Duane” and Mary Heemstra, Carole Faye Korhorn, and Henry “Tim” Heemstra. David will be lovingly remembered by his children David R. and Amy (Freerksen) Ondersma, Suzanne and Randy Dykstra, Sarah and Jon Decker, Holly and Shawn Feenstra, Sally and Kevin Timmerman: grandchildren: David J., Dylan, and Daniel Ondersma, Jonathan and Katie, Alex, Derek, and Nicholas Dykstra, Jordan Decker, Dana, Ty, and Jack Feenstra, Kate, Josie, Calvin, and Calli Timmerman; great-grandchild Tinley Dykstra; siblings: Gordon and Elaine Ondersma, Marilyn and Harvey Holstege, Barbara VanTil; in-laws: Dolly Anne Geers, Joyce Rietema, Ivan “Bud” Korhorn, Jane Heemstra; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of Sheldon Meadows for their compassionate care, especially during the challenging months of Covid.
A service to honor the faith and life of David Ondersma will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Georgetown Protestant Reformed Church, 7146 48th Ave., Hudsonville, 49426 with the Rev. Carl Haak officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 pm, Monday at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State Street, Zeeland MI 49464. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery in Holland.
