GRAND HAVEN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Four Grand Haven Area Public Schools students were injured when the bus that they were traveling in was struck from behind in a two-vehicle collision on Tuesday (Oct. 5, 2021) afternoon.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jon Smoes, deputies and first responders were dispatched to Comstock Street near 154th Avenue shortly after 4 PM on a report of a pickup hitting a school bus at that location. “Investigation on scene showed a silver Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 49-year-old man from Grand Haven, was eastbound on Comstock Street, behind the bus,” Smoes said in a department statement. “As the school bus was slowing for traffic, it was hit from behind by the Silverado. There were approximately 60 students on the bus, and four students were transported to Mercy Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
The pickup driver and the bus driver, a 49-year-old Fruitport woman, was injured, although the pickup driver was “cited for failure to stop in (an) assured clear distance,” Smoes added.
