HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker announced Tuesday afternoon all non-essential activities at the county jail will be suspended “until further notice,” after 40 people were affected by a smaller outbreak at the jail.
In a statement emailed to media Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, Kempker noted six people brought into the county jail have tested positive for COVID-19. Two have mild symptoms, according to his statement, and four appear to be asymptomatic.
Contact tracing by corrections officers and medical professionals at the jail, who are working with Ottawa County Department of Public Health officials, identified at least 35 people exposed to the virus, according to county officials. Those people are in 10-day quarantines.
Everyone at the jail has access to COVID-19 tests and vaccines, according to Kempker’s statement.
He indicated he’s hopeful these measures “will mitigate any COVID spread and maintain citizen and staff health, safety, and security in the facility.”
