SPRING LAKE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Two drivers were injured as a result of a collision between an SUV and a Spring Lake Public Schools bus on Friday afternoon (Sept. 24, 2021).
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan DeVries, deputies and first responders were dispatched to the intersection of Leonard Street and 148th Avenue shortly before 3 PM. “Investigation into the crash showed by the bus was eastbound on Leonard with six students, a bus aide and a driver on board,” DeVries said in a department statement. “A 2013 Ford Escape, driven by an 84-year-old Spring Lake man, pulled out from the stop sign, attempting to turn left from southbound 148th. Several witnesses on the scene state that the SUV pulled out in the path of the school bus, which did have the right of way. The vehicles collided head on and the bus was sent off the road, striking a power pole and coming to rest on its side.”
The SUV driver was taken to an undisclosed area hospital with serious injuries, while the bus adie, a 78-year-old Fruitport man, suffered what DeVries would only describe as “non life-threatening injuries.” The six students and the bus driver, a 57-year-old Nunica man, were not hurt, and school district officials notified the parents of the students, who came to the scene to pick up their children.
The collision remains under investigation.
