HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Pedal Holland will be completing their fourth bike and pedestrian counts this weekend, and organizers are looking for a few more volunteers.
The counting started Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, and is set to finish on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021. These counting sessions started in 2016 by Pedal Holland, a nonprofit organization aimed at making bicycling in the greater Holland area an easy choice.
“Getting solid numbers on how many people are enjoying active transportation is really exciting, because it helps us understand what’s working and where the gaps are. Getting out into the community to do these counts also lets us see important things that don’t show up on spreadsheet,” said Meika Weiss, Pedal Holland’s board president, in a statement emailed to media. “We’ve seen a lot more electric bikes and also more young families carrying children on cargo bikes this year, so those will both be thing to watch. It’s great to see.”
During a bike count, volunteers to sit outside, using a clipboard to tally how many people travel an area on bikes, on foot, or using what Weiss calls “micromobility devices” — skateboards and scooters.
Pedal Holland has selected nine sites for this year’s count, in the City of Holland, Park Township, and Holland Charter Township. Information collected will be shared — with safety suggestions — with each municipality. To volunteer or learn more, visit pedalholland.org.
