HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Nine volunteers devoted 38 hours at four Pedal Holland count sites last week. This week, organizers of the bike count are looking for a few more people to volunteer in 2-hour shifts.
The goal is to count how many bicyclists are traveling around Holland, with the aim to advocate planning practices to city officials.
Last week’s county focused on Holland State Park and Tunnel Park, according to Pedal Holland’s blog.
Volunteers also started counting bikes and pedestrians using Unity Bridge on River Avenue, with a similar survey set for this week. Volunteers will also be assigned spots on South Shore Drive as it runs into the South Shore Village area, near 16th and 17th streets. There’s talk of a potential future bike facility in the South Shore Village area, but no final decisions are made at this time.
Volunteers agree to spend two hours counting all the people on bikes, pedestrians, and, depending on the street, passing cars.
While Pedal Holland needs just a few volunteers for the remaining week days of the count, they have a number of slots to be filled for Saturday.
