Peter Poortenga Jr.

Pete was born July 17, 1945, in Lansing, Illinois, to Peter A. and Ann (Ipema) Poortenga.  Pete was a truck driver throughout his working career. He was hard working and always willing to help his family.

The most important things in Pete’s life were his faith and his family.   Pete married Jan Blankespoor on August 27, 1963, and they raised their family in Lynwood, Illinois.  Pete and Jan moved to West Michigan in 2017 and became members of Hudsonville Protestant Reformed Church.  He was preceded in death by his sister Delores Jean Poortenga, in-laws: Chuck Underwood, and Shirley Poortenga.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jan, their children: Valerie and Todd Terpstra of Lansing, IL, Judy and Jerry Fynaardt of New Sharon, IA, Ranae and George Vroom of Randolph, WI, Joanne and Steve McNary of San Antonio, TX, Dee and Bryant Van Overloop of Hudsonville; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Gord and Ashley Terpstra, Jill Terpstra, Ian Terpstra, Maddy Terpstra, Jaci Terpstra, Mitch and Emily Fynaardt (Ellory, Reid, Lena), Alex and Amy Fynaardt (Davis, Dallas), Caleb Fynaardt, Kyle Fynaardt, Dani Vroom, Nick and Erika Vroom (Theodore, Amelia, Katherine), Dylan and Patricia Vroom, Sierra McNary, Jaclyn McNary, Sydney Van Overloop, Ashlyn Van Overloop, Maraya Van Overloop, Aliya Van Overloop; siblings: Ruth Underwood, Elaine, and Dewey Vander Noord, Alvin Poortenga, Sandy and John Heys, Bob and Linda Poortenga, Dave and Lindsay Poortenga, Lois and Dave Nelson, Karen Poortenga, and many extended family members.

A service to honor the faith and life of Pete Poortenga will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, September 17, 2021, at Hudsonville Protestant Reformed Church, 5101 Beechtree Ave., Hudsonville MI 49426.  Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Thursday, also at Hudsonville PRC.  Interment will be in Georgetown Twp.
