UPDATE: Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker tells WHTC the 16-year-old suspect has been arrested without incident and is now also at the Ottawa County juvenile facility, awaiting charges related to this incident.
HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — One Evart teen is in Ottawa County’s juvenile detention facility, awaiting several charges, after a police chase that ended in a Zeeland township crash early this morning. A second Evart teen is at large.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Hallmeyer said the incident started after police tried to stop a blue Honda, which sped away and zipped through a red light at Chicago Drive and Byron Road, crashing in a grassy area.
The two occupants, one 15-year-old boy and one 16-year-old boy, fled on foot. Police captured the younger boy. The older teen remains at large. Both had escaped from the Evart juvenile detention center, Hallmeyer said, and are believed to have stolen a vehicle from that area, abandoning it in the northern part of Kent County, and stealing a second vehicle in Jenison.
This incident remains under investigation.
