WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sarah Mikesell got the ball rolling for the Hope College women’s soccer team quickly on Wednesday. Madison Holloway took over from there.
Holloway’s hat trick and Mikesell’s opening goal and two assists propelled the unbeaten Flying Dutch to a 6-0 non-league victory at North Park University (Illinois) in Chicago.
Hope improved to 3-0 on the season with its highest-scoring game since an 8-0 victory at Saint Mary’s College on September 20, 2017.
Holloway recorded the first three-goal game of her college career. She now has six games on the season, a career-high.
The sophomore forward from Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) was the first member of the Flying Dutch to accomplish the feat since Elizabeth Perkins did it during a 4-3 victory at Trine University on October 12, 2016.
MEN’S GOLF
Coming off a victory last weekend at a two-day, 14-team invitational, the Hope College men’s golf team picked up right where they left off on Tuesday.
The Flying Dutchmen won the first MIAA Jamboree of the 2021 season at Duck Lake Country Club, besting the seven other league teams with a team total of 295.
That score was seven strokes better than second-place Kalamazoo College (302) and nine strokes fewer than third-place Calvin University (304). Other team scores were Trine University (305), Adrian College (308), Albion College (313), Alma College (321), and Olivet College (338).
A freshman led Hope on the par-70 track in Albion, Michigan. Jack Guerrera of Northville, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central), pictured, fired a one-over 71, his lowest round as a Flying Dutchman. His score tied him for second overall, as Parker Pickell of Kalamazoo was the medalist with an even-par 70.
VOLLEYBALL
Hope College’s Tracy Westra has been chosen as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Volleyball Specialty Player of the Week.
The senior from Clarendon Hills Illinois (Timothy Christian HS) is receiving the honor for the first time this season and the third time in her career.
Westra helped the seventh-ranked Flying Dutch win their first three matches of the season last weekend.
The setter and environmental engineering major recorded 9.09 assists, 2.18 digs, and 1.45 assists per game against St. Olaf College (Minnesota), Aurora University (Illinois), and No. 18 College of St. Benedict (Minnesota) at the University of Chicago Gargoyle Classic.
