PARK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The effort to get a barge unstuck from the shores of Lake Michigan north of Holland continues.
According to Ottawa County Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt, his office, along with the US Coast Guard, the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, and the Park Township Fire Department, were notified on Thursday evening (Sept. 2, 2021) by the National Response Center of a partially submerged and stuck construction excavator in Lake Michigan. That excavator was attempting to remove a barge that previously went aground off of the 300 block of North Lakeshore Drive.
Crews were able to get the excavator freed and removed on Friday morning, with no leakage of any fluids coming from that machine. However, the barge is still stuck, “and the owner is cooperating with authorities to have it freed,” County Sheriff’s Captain Jake Sparks said in a department statement. “Additional heavy equipment has been brought to the scene in an attempt to correct the issue.”
