Leona Vereeke age 92 passed into her eternal life with Jesus, at her home on August 26 with family at her side.
Leona was the daughter of Stephen and Janet Wiersema. She was a lifelong resident of Holland.
There are not enough words to describe how much she was loved and admired. Leona had a special connection with children. She worked as a teacher’s assistant for many years in the West Ottawa schools. Her talents were diverse from sewing, crocheting, canning, cooking, teaching, fun outings, and games. She was a member of the Reformed Church and used her gifts to serve at several local churches. Leona’s life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse, PS 118:24 – “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Lester in 2012, son Richard in 1994, and daughter Patricia Vredeveld in 2021.
Leona is survived by her children: Jerry Vereeke (Candace Smith) of New York, Janice (Ken) Aalderink of Holland, Kathleen Adair (Don Mayer) of Colorado, Nancy (Tom) VanLiere of Mears, Barbara Otten of Holland, son-in-law Craig Vredeveld of Grand Haven, 16 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Sister: Stephanie (Gregg) Harter of Holland, step-sister Sue Lynn Wiersema, sister-in-law Marline Wiersema, brothers-in-law Glen (Shirley) Vereeke, Don (Shirley) Vereeke, Ray Klomparens of Holland, Robert Adams of Orting, WA; Jack Otten and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
