HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Ottawa County’s emergency manager, Lou Hunt, alerted the media to a fuel leak in Ferrysburg that happened just before 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021. Listen to the complete podcast:
The leak, at Buckeye Terminal, 17806 N. Shore Road in Ferrysburg, was stopped, according to Hunt, but fire and HazMat crews remained on the scene to monitor the situation and clean up the spilled fuel. Hunt indicated no danger to the public, noting that crews were on the scene through the night.
Hunt told WHTC it’s unclear what volume of gasoline spilled, but he noted “a significant” amount of soil would be removed from the area.
Response teams indicated they believed they prevented the gas from getting into a nearby bay, The Sag, which is part of the Grand River.
He said it’s unclear whether the leak happened because of human error or equipment failure. He said company officials are responsible for documenting the incident with state officials
