WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – A new invasive pest may be menacing Michigan soon … if it hasn’t come here already.
The US Department of Agriculture this week sent PSA alerts to radio and television stations statewide, alerting them that, “You’re in one of the areas across the country where Asian longhorned beetles are eating our trees alive. The trees in your area and the surrounding areas are at risk to massive devastation, with economic impact potentially reaching into the billions, unless we stop the Asian longhorned beetle.”
Master Gardener Jan Meeuwsen of DeBruyn Seed in Zeeland says that this alert is to be taken by the public seriously.
“Unfortunately, just a couple of them can absolutely kill a tree within a matter of a year of two,” she said on “WHTC Morning News” during her weekly appearance on Tuesday (July 27, 2021). “It’s not something that we want here.”
Signs of the Asian longhorned beetles are dying branches and perfectly round holes no larger than a dime. While maple trees are particularly susceptible, any type of tree can be infected. Those who may spot these signs are encouraged to report them to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
