MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TENNIS
Austin Hunt has been chosen to lead the Hope College men’s and women’s tennis program.
The former Grand Valley State University assistant coach becomes the 13th men’s head coach for the Flying Dutchmen and the 15th women’s coach for the Flying Dutch. Hunt follows Bob Cawood, who stepped down after four seasons.
Director of Athletics Tim Schoonveld is thrilled to welcome a tennis coach of Hunt’s caliber to Hope.
“We are so excited to have Austin join our team. He has a passion for coaching and is driven to not only be successful on the court but is committed to helping to impact and transform the lives of student-athletes,” Schoonveld said. “He is going to do a great job and will continue to build on the work of Bob Cawood within our programs. We want to welcome Austin and his wife, Kayla, and are excited to see his impact on our campus.”
MIAA
Hope College has 270 student-athletes who made the 2020-21 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll.
The 31st annual Academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the year. The academic awards program is administered by the faculty representatives of the MIAA member colleges.
Among the Hope students named to the Honor Roll are 31 seniors who both lettered four years and achieved the academic distinction.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Seven members of the Hope College men’s basketball team have been selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court for the 2020-21 season.
Seniors Danny Beckman, Ryan Gamm, Preston Granger, Cal Hackert, Sam Vree, and Cal Hackert join juniors Jeff Bikes and Ty George in representing the Flying Dutchmen.
“It takes tremendous effort, organization, and sacrifice to maintain the academic status that these men have,” head coach Greg Mitchell said. “I’m incredibly proud of their ability to focus and prioritize their time while collectively contributing to the success of our team.”
WOMEN’S GOLF
The Hope College women’s golf team has earned the 2020-21 Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Team Award.
The award recognizes the women’s collegiate golf program with the highest collective average team GPA which includes all of the team’s student-athletes for the 2020-21 season. Twenty-five teams from each NCAA division and the NAIA were selected.
The Flying Dutch, led by head coach Greg Stafford, recorded a 3.61 GPA while also finishing runner-up in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association spring season.
“We’re blessed to have a core of hard-working student-athletes on our golf team,” Stafford said. “This was a team goal for us this year. We were so close last year.”
