WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – The state’s Congressional delegation is applauding the passage of the PFAs Action Act.
By a margin of 241-182 on Wednesday (July 21, 2021), US House members endorsed the measure that sets national drinking waters standards, designating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances as hazardous so that the US Environmental Protection Agency can clean up sites in Michigan and nationwide, and provide $200 million in funding for water utilities and wastewater treatment.
While sites in Rockford and Parchment were the most notable for having PFAs in its water, other areas have also been affected, including well water southeast of Grand Haven, in the district of Zeeland Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga.
“It’s an issue around the country that many have had to deal with,” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance on Thursday. “It’s really sort of the price tag for some of the practices that we used to have that were common, and we know that, sadly, one of the largest polluters was the federal government, oftentimes through the military.”
The measure, co-sponsored by St. Joseph Republican Fred Upton and Dearborn Democrat Debbie Dingell, now heads to the US Senate for consideration.
