HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The “no vacancy” signs are out for most of the Holland area hotels and motels this weekend (July 23-25, 2021).
This is because two major sporting events are slated for the Tulip City. The 13/14 & Open Michigan Swimming Summer Championship Meet, hosted by Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics, is at the Holland Community Aquatic Center, while games in the 2021 Storm Summer Classic College Showcase softball tournament are slated for various venues in the area (weather permitting). Over 300 athletes are expected to descend for these events.
Dave Lorenz of Pure Michigan says that the travel and tourism promotion arm of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has set up “Pure Michigan Sports” to help bring regional sporting events to local communities across the state.
“Think about this,” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance on Friday. “These are young people. They are still, quite often, looking at their future and considering what they might be doing in the future. Can you imagine what might happen with some of these people who might want to eventually move here, maybe bring a business here as they grow and prosper? That’s what travel does.”
