HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Two people escaped injuries, but their travel trailer did not, in a crash just before 5 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2021, that tied up traffic on I-96 for hours.
The crash, near Eighth Street in Tallmadge Township, happened while the two Dearborn Heights residents were westbound on I-96, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Hallmeyer.
The driver spotted a vehicle stopped on the freeway, according to Hallmeyer, and “was forced to take evasive action,” heading toward the median to avoid a crash.
The move caused the travel trailer “to disengage and overturn, which resulted in a large amount of debris to scatter across the roadway,” Hallmeyer wrote in an email to media.
The crash investigation and clean-up work took several hours, leaving the freeway backed up, he said. The car that stopped on the freeway left the crash scene before police arrived, according to Hallmeyer. The crash remains under investigation.
