ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A long-time building in Zeeland could get new life soon.
During Tuesday (July 6, 2021) night’s bi-weekly business meeting, the Zeeland City Council will hold a mandatory public hearing before voting on a resolution that would help establish a Commercial Rehabilitation District for the site of 341 and 349 East Main Avenue. It’s the location of the Sligh Building and an adjacent parcel to its west, and was most recently an office company’s warehouse after Sligh closed its clock-building business in 2005.
According to Zeeland City Manager Tim Klunder, Geenen DeKock Properties bought the structure last October.
“They’re looking to convert the majority of it into apartments,” he said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during a Tuesday appearance. “There might be some commercial component of it as well. What (the designation) does is it essentially freezes the taxable value of the project to what it was before they would start any improvements.”
If this and an accompanying Commercial Rehabilitation Exemption Certificate are approved, GDK would only pay the school operating millage and the state education tax levied on the new value over a 10-year period. Another public hearing would have to be slated before Council would vote on the certificate.
Tonight’s Zeeland City Council meeting is in the second-floor meeting room of City Hall (12 South Elm Street), beginning at 7 PM. The agenda for the meeting is here.
