HOLLAND. (WHTC-AM/FM) — Michael Emmet Lozon, 72, has died, according to an obituary posted online by Dykstra Funeral Home.
He had been diagnosed five months ago with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. Born May 17, 1948, in Grand Haven to Elsie and Howard Lozon, he lived much of his younger life in Alpena, before moving to southwest Michigan.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in photojournalism from Central Michigan University in 1976 and has worked for several Michigan newspapers, including The Holland Sentinel.
In later years, he worked independently, documenting local business’ histories and area entrepreneurs’ personal memoirs.
He taught writing at the Herrick Public Library, and wrote 12 historical books, as well as spent time photographing and writing about Holland’s Farmers Market, with plans to write a book, “Where City and Country Connect – How the Holland Farmers Market Grew from a Few Vendors to a Community Treasure.”
Survivors include his wife Janice of 39 years, his daughter Mandy (Michael) Stahl, his sister Judith Shilts and his brother Ron (Janet) Lozon, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, gifts or cards, his family said he “would be happy if everyone visited a library and pick up any book on local history and read it in his honor.”
Donations can be made to Hospice of Holland. Arrangements are by Dykstra Funeral Homes-Downtown Chapel. Arrangements pending at dykstrafuneralhome.com.
