HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Area police agencies are participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, set for July 1 – 24, 2021.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike VanDenBosch says the goal is to “reduce fatalities and serious injuries caused by an impaired driver and/or not wearing a seat belt.”
Police aim to convince people to buckle up, drive sober and focus on the driving, not the distractions.
VanDenBosch notes that while it’s legal to consume marijuana in Michigan, it is not legal to drive while under the influence of that drug.
The statewide effort includes a video, “Not Legal Here” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag2B50t-QjY reminding viewers that while marijuana use is legal in the state, it is not legal when operating a vehicle.
The statewide effort is coordinated by the Office of Highway Safety and Planning.
VanDenBosch indicated deputies will be focusing on impaired driving and lack of seat belt use, with a zero-tolerance approach. Speed-related fatal crashes rose by 10 percent in one year, despite fewer people being on the roads during the pandemic.
