HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A multi-vehicle crash has critically injured one person and led to a second multi-vehicle crash n Ganges Township, just before 3 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2021, according to Allegan County Sheriff’s Lt. Brett Ensfield.
The initial crash, on northbound I-196 near Mile Marker 30 involved a semi-tractor trailer traveling through a construction area. The driver could not stop in time to avoid traffic congestion, according to Ensfield, and hit a pick-up truck, which in turn hit a third vehicle.
The pick-up truck’s driver was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition, according to Ensfield.
Sheriff’s deputies attending to that crash were then called to a second crash, involving five vehicles, which happened when traffic slowed as a result of the first crash, according to police.
Two people involved in the second crash experienced minor injuries.
Ensfield indicated the crash remains under investigation; it is unclear at this point if speed or alcohol were factors im the crashes.
In an unrelated injury crash Friday, deputies were dispatched at 7:52 p.m. to the intersection of 66th Street at 109th Avenue in Casco Township.
Two vehicles collided after the driver of one vehicle disregarded a stop sign at the intersection. Ensfield indicated the driver of one vehicle was hospitalized in critical condition. Two other occupants of the vehicle had non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the collision, according to Ensfield.
South Haven Area Emergency Services, Air Care, Saugatuck Fire, Ganges Fire, Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Transportation, LIFE EMS, and Fennville firefighters assisted at the crash scenes.
