HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — High waves and rip currents have made for dangerous swimming in Lake Michigan, but there are plenty of land-based attractions in the greater Holland area, including one near downtown: the Wizard of Oz installation. (See WHTC’s photo gallery: whtc.com/pictures.)
The flowered sculpture of the famous book went back up in Centennial Park, at the corner of 12th Street and South River Avenue. Already, visitors are flocking to check it out, even though the surrounding flower beds aren’t quite complete.
Cindy and Andre Lugo arrived from Metairie, LA, with their 10-year-old granddaughter, Asia Lugo Smith.
“It’s my favorite show, same as my mom,” Asia Lugo Smith said, adding that she loves Holland’s display.
Six-year-old Holland resident Claire DeWitt rode bikes with her family yesterday to check out the installation.
“I like that it’s made of flowers, because I like flowers!” she said. Her mom, Sara DeWitt, likes the attraction, too, saying the statues alongside Herrick District Library across South River Avenue have enhanced the display.
