SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – It looks as if there may be a Venetian Festival in Saugatuck this year after all.
During Monday’s (June 14, 2021) scheduled Saugatuck City Council meeting, Council members will be asked to approve a Special Event Permit for the Cow Hill Yacht Club to hold the annual event from July 30th to August 1st. It was initially set to be canceled for a second straight year due to the COVID 19 outbreak, but the lifting of health restrictions on events by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has given festival organizers hope that they can stage a limited event this year.
If the permit is approved, Cow Hill Yacht Club will stage a “Venetian Lite” event that would include a Friday party in Coghlin Park with a band, dancing, a beer tent, a limited bar and food trucks; a Saturday noontime Dinghy Poker Run in the Kalamazoo River; and a Sunday Marina Participation Award ceremony. There will not be fireworks or a boat parade on Saturday, and the other events would be held adhering to all COVID restrictions and best practices, along with not requiring the use of city resources for the poker run.
Also during the 7 PM council meeting, the panel should approve the setting of a June 28th public hearing for the proposed 2021-22 municipal budget, and decide whether to double the rate for parking at Saugatuck Junior-Senior High to $10, with half of the money to go to the city, and the other half to Saugatuck Public Schools to fund its athletics and club programs.
