ST. IGNACE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Some needed money to help rejuvenate and renovate Michigan’s state park system is on the way.
Governor Whitmer used the backdrop of Straits State Park to announce a $250 million plan to modernize state parks and trails. The money, coming from the Biden Administration’s American Rescue Plan, is also seen as an economic boost to the state’s travel and tourism industry, according to Pure Michigan VP Dave Lorenz.
“There are just so many things that have been damaged, either by nature, overuse or abuse,” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during the weekly “Travel Michigan” segment. “I don’t really expect any kind of new parks or construction, but I expect the 250 million dollars to getting the parks to the place that we all really hope they can be.”
The money will pay for what the State Budget Office says is most of the estimated $264 million worth of deferred maintenance at the parks, with a specific to-do list yet to be created.
