ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The threat of cyberattacks is spreading.
As JBS USA resumed operations at its American plants on Thursday (June 3, 2021) following a ransomware attack last weekend, word comes that New York City’s MTA and the steamship authority serving the Martha’s Vineyard vicinity in Massachusetts were also hit this week. It comes on the heels of the Colonial Pipeline breach that snarled much of the nation’s fuel supplies last month.
The threat is real, according to Congressman Bill Huizenga, who cited an example of a number of interconnected Muskegon companies that were victimized in his district. “One of them got hit, and it spread to a number of others,” the Zeeland Republican said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly interview on Thursday. “There was significant down time and significant money that was paid out. In fact, insurance companies are now offering riders, but they have limits as to what they will spend on that.”
Huizenga added that cybersecurity was the number one security concern of every banking official that testified before him and other members of the House Financial Services Committee during a hearing last week, and that communication between government and industry is necessary to avoid any repeat of the Colonial Pipeline situation.
