WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – It looks as if Fred Upton may go against his fellow Republicans in the US House again.
On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, the House is scheduled to vote on a proposal to create a commission for investigating the events surrounding the US Capitol building on Jan. 6. The veteran lawmaker from St. Joseph, who was one of the few GOP members who voted for an article of impeachment against then-President Donald Trump stemming from that incident, has been critical of some Lower Chamber members who have downplayed the events on that day in recent Congressional testimony.
“That claim is just bogus,” Upton said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance on Tuesday. “It didn’t exactly happen that way. At the end of the day, we need to get this independent, bipartisan commission (going) that will have subpoena power, with both sides agreeing on the subpoenas.”
Republicans say that such a commission should also look at what the GOP claims is “political violence” by anti-fascists and Black Lives Matter, rather than focus narrowly on the actions of Mr. Trump and his supporters on Jan. 6.
