Hope's Luke Elder runs around a Calvin defender during the 2021 MIAA Tournament semifinal vs. Calvin at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
MEN’S LACROSSE
The Hope College men’s lacrosse team continues to have bragging rights in the Hope-Calvin Rivalry, remaining undefeated against the Knights since 2013 when lacrosse became a varsity sport.
The Flying Dutchmen added another win to that record Tuesday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals, downing Calvin University, 22-7, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium to advance to the title game.
Hope will face Albion College on Friday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at Alumni Field. This will be Hope’s third appearance in an MIAA Tournament championship game since 2018.
Michael Mann (Plymouth/University of Detroit-Jesuit HS) and Luke Elder (Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids) led in scoring with six goals each. Wiggins had three for the night.
The Flying Dutchmen also made a statement in assists, recording 12 for the night, which is the third-most in MIAA Tournament history.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Sydney Jackson stepped into a new leading role for the Hope College women’s tennis team and flourished. The junior from Fort Wayne, Indiana (Carroll HS) moved up to the top singles and doubles flights this season and went undefeated in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association matches. As a result, MIAA coaches voted Jackson as the league’s Most Valuable Player.
With Jackson atop the lineup, the Flying Dutch won all of their league matches and claimed the 27th MIAA championship in team history. Hope has captured six consecutive MIAA titles.
Jackson is the Flying Dutch’s 18th MIAA MVP and fourth in a row. The biomedical and bioelectrical engineering major joins teammate Leah Newhof on the first team. Senior Bailey Chorney and junior Saydee Johns are second-team selections.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Hope College’s Bailey Chorney has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award.
The annual scholar-athlete award, instituted by the MIAA in 2007, honors Karen Caine, former long-time women’s tennis coach at Adrian College. Chorney is the Flying Dutch’s sixth honoree and third in a row. She is a business and Spanish double major.
MEN’S TENNIS
Jacob Burkett utilizes his talent on the tennis court to the fullest this season for Hope College. The sophomore from Clarkston, Michigan (Clarkston HS) posted a combined 12-1 singles and doubles record against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition and claimed MIAA Most Valuable Player honors.
Burkett is the Flying Dutchmen’s seventh MIAA MVP and the first since current-head coach Bob Cawood was a senior player in 2013.
Burkett is joined on the All-MIAA First Team by teammate Cameron Coates.
BASEBALL
The Hope College baseball team continued its high-scoring ways on Tuesday with a non-conference 16-5 victory over Kalamazoo College to extend its winning streak to eight in a row. And senior captain Evan Maday of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Kentwood HS) owns another program record.
The nine-inning victory marked the 11th time that the Flying Dutchmen scored 10 runs or more this season, with five of those double-digit games coming during their recent win streak. Hope is now 19-13 on the season.
Maday stole two more bases to bring his season total to 32, breaking the single-season stolen base record once held by Mitch VanPutten who had 30 in 1985.
Maday is also Hope’s career stolen base leader with 78, a total he has put up over just three seasons since the pandemic canceled his junior-year season in 2020. Additionally, Maday currently is ranked first in NCAA Division III for stolen bases in 2021.
