LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – With two members of the state House facing drunken driving charges in separate incidents last month, there are some who question whether they should continue to serve as legislators.
Suburban Detroit Democrat Jewell Jones and suburban Grand Rapids Republican Bryan Posthumus were arrested three weeks apart, and while Jones struggled with police officers when he was being detained, Posthumus was injured in a single-vehicle crash.
Should these incidents disqualify these men from continuing as state lawmakers? “I do think that there should be repercussions for both gentlemen, and I think that they need to be handled through their respective caucuses in punishing them,” second-term Republican Representative Luke Meerman of Coopersville said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during his monthly appearance on Monday (May 3, 2021). “I don’t know if it’s reductions in committee assignments or something (else) along those lines to say publicly that this is dangerous and we don’t take this lightly.”
Jones has a preliminary hearing on “super-drunk” and other charges in Howell on June 30th; Posthumus’ case was under investigation over the weekend before any charges were to be filed in Kent County.
