WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – The debate over a 51st state joining the Union has resurfaced in Congress.
The US House is expected on Thursday to pass legislation that would make the District of Columbia a state, with full representation in both chambers of Capitol Hill. Proponents claim that about 700 thousand residents in Washington would get a voice, but opponents counter that it would likely add more Democrats in Congress. House Representative Bill Huizenga believes that this is a constitutional issue more than anything else.
“This is a very different conversation than making, say, Puerto Rico a state, or making some other area a state,” the Zeeland Republican said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly interview on Thursday ahead of the vote. “It is a special place, written into the constitution, and they (majority Democrats) want to violate it.”
Although supported by President Biden, the proposal may not get to his desk due to expected minority GOP filibuster action in the Senate that would need 60 votes to override, which the Democrats do not have.
