MEN’S SOCCER
The third-seeded Hope College men’s soccer team defeated Adrian College, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The Flying Dutchmen (3-1-1) will host seventh-seeded Alma College on Thursday, April 22 at 6 p.m. Alma upset second-seeded Kalamazoo College in a shootout after the game left overtime in a 4-4 tie. Hope is the highest remaining seed as first-seeded Calvin University lost to eighth-seeded Albion College, 2-1.
Ryan Flynn, a junior from Bloomington, Illinois (Bloomington HS), scored in the first half to give the Flying Dutchmen a 1-0 halftime lead.
Matt Wimmer, a freshman from Farmington Hills, Michigan (Detroit Jesuit HS), pictured, gave the Flying Dutchmen a 2-0 lead with his first goal of the season at the 49th minute. He was assisted by Flynn.
Ethan Jansen, a freshman from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern HS) made it 3-0 on a nice pass from Kai Jurgle (Ann Arbor, Mich./Avondale HS) at the 69th minute for his second goal of the season.
VOLLEYBALL
From the opening serve, the Hope College volleyball team went on the attack in the opening round of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The 16th-ranked Flying Dutch put Kalamazoo College on the defensive early and paved the way for a 3-0 victory on Tuesday at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The 25-16, 25-15, 25-15 decision advanced second-seeded Hope (7-1) to the 7 p.m. semifinal against third-seeded Albion College on Thursday, April 22 at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Hope-Albion winner reaches the MIAA final on Saturday, April 24.
Junior McKenna Otto (Wheaton, Illinois/Wheaton North HS) finished with a game-high 15 kills on a .379 attack percentage. It was Otto’s second-highest kill total of the season.
VOLLEYBALL
Hope College’s Maggie Wehrmeyer is the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Volleyball Specialist of the Week.
The freshman libero from Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) is honored for the first time in her Flying Dutch career.
Wehrmeyer averaged 19.3 digs over three matches last week against Albion College, Olivet College and Calvin University. The Flying Dutch won two of those matches.
MEN’S LACROSSE
The Hope College men’s lacrosse team connected early and maintained a strong lead in their Senior Day win against Kalamazoo College on Tuesday night
Colton Warren scored the first of 10 unanswered goals by the Flying Dutchmen three minutes and 18 seconds into the first quarter. The senior midfielder of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS) also scored the final goal of the game with three minutes and 24 seconds remaining.
The 21-9 win improves Hope’s record to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. It also tied the stadium record for most goals scored in a game at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Senior midfielder Luke Elder of Grand Rapids (East Grand Rapids HS) led in scoring with a career-high seven goals.
Elder’s 10 goals tied Hope’s stadium record for goals by an individual.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Hope College’s Natalie Hammer has been chosen as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week.
The freshman forward from Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS) is claiming the recognition for the first time in her career.
Hammer scored the game-winning goals in a 1-0 victory at Kalamazoo College last week. It was Hammer’s third goal in two games and fourth of the season.
