LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – It’s spring cleaning time for Michigan’s major roads.
State Department of Transportation officials say that, from April 17th to the 25th of 2021, volunteers will be picking up litter along highways across Lower Michigan. It’s part of Michigan’s “Adopt-A-Highway” program, which began 31 years ago, that aims to keep roadways free of garbage through collections done three times a year by groups instead of by state workers.
“Our thousands of Adopt-A-Highway volunteers deserve thanks for helping to save taxpayer dollars while keeping Michigan roadsides clean,” said State Transportation Director Paul C. Ajegba in a department statement issued on Monday (Apr. 12, 2021). “Their community spirit and pride make a huge difference. We ask all motorists to keep an eye out for these volunteers and drive cautiously during the pickup periods.”
More than six thousand miles of state highways are included in this program. More information is available here.
