GRAND HAVEN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 39-year-old trucker hauling sugar was hospitalized following a crash south of Grand Haven overnight on Saturday (Apr. 3, 2021).
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Dennis Luce, the unnamed man from Chesapeake, Virginia was northbound on US-31 around 4:30 AM and had just passed Buchanan Street. “For an unknown reason, the semi-truck crossed the median and southbound US-31 travel lanes before rolling on its side and coming to rest on the shoulder of the road,” Luce said in a department statement.
While the trucker was taken in stable condition to Mercy Hospital for treatment, US-31 was closed in both directions for about an hour to remove the semi and its trailer, and a lane of the the highway near the site of where the truck came to rest was blocked off for several hours while deputies investigated the crash.
