LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – As Easter weekend arrives, with Spring Break for youth following, concerns about a spike in COVID 19 cases across Michigan are rising.
For tourism industry officials such as Pure Michigan Vice President Dave Lorenz, such concerns are well founded. “We’re at that point where, about springtime, it would be the most dangerous part of the entire pandemic,” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance on Friday, “and the part that would provide the greatest opportunity, because we all these vaccines getting out now. As we start to feel better about things, as the warmer weather comes, people are starting to get a little bit lazy.
“I know you’re tired of wearing those masks. I know you’re tired of not being able to gather in groups, but the case count is rising dramatically, and not in a good way.”
According to a review of daily COVID case reports by the Lansing-based MIRS news agency, the number of COVID cases reported in March (84,678) was nearly three times the amount from February (28,340). However, the number of deaths reported in March was lower than last month – 570, compared to the 921 reported in February. Testing in March was up to 1.1 million after dipping to 920,775 in February.
