DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Tigers opened the 2021 season with a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians yesterday. Miguel Cabrera smacked a two-run homer in his first at-bat. Cabrera and Al Kaline are now the only players to hit 350 home runs and collect 2000 hits for Detroit. Matthew Boyd got the win scattering three hits in five and two-third scoreless innings. Julio Teheran gets the start for Detroit against Cleveland’s Zach Plesac tomorrow.
The Tigers placed outfielder Christin Stewart on waivers to make room on the roster for relief pitcher Derek Holland. If Stewart is not claimed by another team, Detroit can send him to Triple-A Toledo. Pitcher Spencer Turnbull has been cleared to resume baseball activities after going through COVID-19 protocol. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Turnbull will throw bullpen sessions in Lakeland and then work out in Toledo before returning to Detroit’s rotation.
