He said he and his team were optimistic at the start of the season, and at the end of Tuesday’s round, Coach Greg Stafford’s Hope College women’s golf team put up a score that shows why.
The Flying Dutch were the winners of the second MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s College at Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Indiana.
Hope bested the Belles on their home course, as well as the other seven league schools, with a team total of 312. Saint Mary’s was second with 316 while Calvin University was third with 325.
On a windy but beautiful March day with temps in the mid-60s, the Flying Dutch were led by senior Abigail Meder of Lansing, Michigan (Lansing Catholic Central HS) who carded a 4-over-par 76.
Junior Megan Jenkinson of Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS), pictured right, was just one stroke back of Meder, firing a career-low-tying 77.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Rachel Elder’s supreme scoring touch propelled the Hope College women’s lacrosse team out of an early deficit against Adrian College.
After spotting the Bulldogs the first two goals of the game, the Elder-powered Flying Dutch reeled off the next six goals and motored to a 19-6 victory at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Elder’s career-high seven goals matched Hope’s stadium record for goals scored by an individual.
The senior attacker from Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) equaled Hope’s stadium record shared by three former Hope teammates: Kate Sabourin (2013 vs. Siena Heights), Maddie Ferguson (2013 vs. Siena Heights) and Molly Greenfield (2013 vs. Olivet).
Hope improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutch’s next game is against Albion College on Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
MEN’S GOLF
Hope College’s Will Robson has been chosen as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week.
The freshman from Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) is honored after shooting a 3-over-par 75 at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall last week.
Robson tied for second at the first MIAA Jamboree of the season. It was Robson’s first collegiate event.
