HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Zeeland resident Trent Payne, 26, has died from injuries suffered in a car-motorcycle crash on Sunday, March 21, 2021, according to a statement from Ottawa County Sheriff’s authorities.
He was airlifted to Spectrum Health Butterworth with life-threatening injuries after the crash, on Lakewood Boulevard at North Park Drive in Holland Township, which happened just before noon Sunday, police said.
He’d been driving a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle west on Lakewood, and not wearing a helmet, police said. A 31-year-old Holland Township man, driving a 2018 Honda Civic east on Lakewood, was turning into a driveway on Lakewood’s north side when the motorcycle hit the car, police said.
The driver of the Honda Civic had minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital. Mr. Payne went by AeroMed to Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids, police said. Mr. Payne, a West Ottawa High graduate, was married with a young daughter.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Rotman, and the crash remains under investigation. Asked if charges would be filed in this case, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. David VanderPloeg tells WHTC “no determination of fault has been made yet in this case.”
He went on to note, that when the investigation is complete, “the report will be turned over to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office for review. They will determine whether or not charges will be filed in this case based on the evidence.”
