WOMEN’S SWIM/DIVE
Most Valuable Swimmer Emma Schaefer headlines a group of eight All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association honorees for the Hope College women’s swimming and diving team.
The senior from St. Johns, Michigan (DeWitt HS), is receiving MIAA Most Valuable honors for the second consecutive season. She is the fifth Flying Dutch swimmer to accomplish that feat.
Schaefer is joined on the All-MIAA team by six other Hope swimmers and one diver: Aubrey East, Jess Estabrook, Rachel Gamm, Cameron Hamilton, Maddy O’Donnell, Madeline Tessin, and Delaney Wesolek.
At the 2021 MIAA Championships earlier this month, Schaefer won three individual events and one relay to help Hope claim an MIAA team championship.
Schaefer set MIAA and school records in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2 minutes, 18.55 seconds. She surpassed the MIAA mark of 2:19.74 swam by Calvin’s Elizabeth Counsel in 2011 and the 21-year-old school record of 2:18.68 set by Betsy Vandenberg in 2000.
In the 200 individual medley, Schaefer eclipsed her school record with a time of 2:04.92 while winning for the third consecutive season. Her previous best of 2:06.58 happened in 2019.
In the 100 breaststroke, Schaefer lowered her own school record to 1:03.75. She also swam on the winning 400 medley relay.
MEN’S SWIM/DIVE
The future looks bright for the Hope College men’s swimming and diving team. Not only did its student-athletes earn the team’s best finish in seven years at this year’s MIAA Championships, they did it with a majority of freshmen and sophomores.
And the 2021 All-MIAA selections for the Flying Dutchmen reflect that. Six of Hope’s seven All-MIAA award winners are underclassmen.
Led by two-time all-league honorees Kameron Wilcox and Bailey Smith, the Flying Dutchmen finished second at the league championships last Saturday, their best result since 2014. Joining Smith and Wilcox for the first time on the All-MIAA team are swimmers Ben Catton, Theo Duong, Conor East, Jack Muller, and Jake Peterson.
Wilcox repeats as the MIAA’s Most Valuable Diver after sharing the honor this season. The junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS) defended his title on the 3-meter board with a winning point total of 501.25 while placing third in 1-meter diving with 445.50.
MEN’S SWIM/DIVE
Hope College’s Kamaron Wilcox is the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s Diving Athlete of the Week.
The junior mathematics and physics major from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS) is receiving the honor for his performance during last week’s MIAA Championship.
Wilcox was named the MIAA’s MIAA Valuable Diver on Saturday. He finished first on the 3-meter board at the MIAA Championships and third on the 1-meter board.
This is the fourth MIAA weekly honor that Wilcox has earned during his Hope career.
BASEBALL
Hope College shortstop Brant Kym has been chosen as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Position Athlete of the Week.
The senior business and economics major from Libertyville, Illinois (Libertyville HS) is recognized for his performance in three Flying Dutchmen victories last week.
Kym batted .556 with five hits, including one home run, one triple and two doubles. He also collected seven runs batted in and five runs scored.
Kym went 3-for-3 with a walk and four runs scored on Friday during a 13-3 victory against Olivet College in Hope’s home opener. He hit a two-run homer during the sixth inning, his first homer of the season.
Then, on Saturday, Kym went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, during a 16-7 victory at Albion College in Game 2 of a doubleheader. He tripled and doubled.
This is Kym’s first MIAA weekly honor.
BASEBALL
Hope College goalie Ian Bosman has been selected as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week.
The junior biomedical and biomechanical engineering major from Centennial, Colorado (Cherry Creek HS) is honored after his performance during a 20-7 victory against visiting Alma College on Friday.
Bosman recorded a season-high 13 saves with a 76.5 percent save percentage against the Scots. He collected eight ground balls.
It was Bosman’s third start of the season and third victory for the unbeaten Flying Dutchmen (3-0 overall).
This is Bosman’s first MIAA weekly honor.
