HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A huge retail hole in downtown Holland should be filled shortly.
The owner of the property that once was the home for the Alpenrose Restaurant and Sandcastle for Kids, at the corner of East 8th Street and Central Avenue, announced this week that Bowerman Blueberries has entered into an agreement to set up a restaurant at the site. “We are thankful that the Bowerman family is opening an excellent restaurant in downtown Holland,” Elsa Prince Broekhuizen, owner of the property, said in a statement. “Their reputation has spread throughout West Michigan and many locals, as well as those passing through our city, have come to enjoy their farm-fresh healthy foods and tasty treats.”
Bowerman will be offering its “Famous Blueberry Donuts,” as well as pancakes, pies, fresh produce in season, and frozen blueberries at the new café year-round, as well as made-to-order quality items for breakfast and lunch.
The site became available when first Sandcastle, and then Alpenrose, ceased operations late last year. It was an opportunity that Bowerman President Tom Parker said, in a statement, the family couldn’t pass up. “We’ve been bursting at the seams on James Street over the past two to three years,” President Tom Parker said. “We’re taking our local family farm to a downtown urban setting since direct-to-consumer sales is the future of Bowerman Blueberries.”
In addition to setting up shop downtown, Bowerman Blueberries will expand their 67-year-old flagship operation, located at the 100-acre farm on James Street, from 3,600 square feet to 7,200 square feet. The opening of the new location, as well as the expansion of the existing operation, is expected to be ready at a yet-to-be-disclosed time this summer.
