COVERT, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Even though it’s destined for decommission, the need for a safety exercise at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant south of South Haven continues.
Outside local law enforcement and safety officers will participate in a biannual Offsite Response Organizations drill. According to Lieutenant Robert Kirk, Emergency Manager for Van Buren County, the Tuesday, March 9th exercise, “is required to be performed every two years to test the ORO’s emergency response plans in regard to a nuclear power plant accident.”
Officials of the Federal Emergency Management Agency will grade the exercise and disclose preliminary results during a Friday morning press briefing.
Entergy, the current operator of Palisades, is slated to turn over control of the 50-year-old facility to Holtec International next spring, which will then incrementally shut down the plant over the next two decades.
