WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The top-ranked Hope College women’s basketball team wrapped up the regular season with its second consecutive perfect run through MIAA regular-season play.
During a 101-37 victory against Kalamazoo College on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse, the Flying Dutch (13-0 overall) opened the game by scoring nine of the first 11 points and never surrendering the lead after that.
Hope reached the century mark for the second time this season and the 28th time in its history.
Seventeen different players scored. Senior guard Lauren Newman (Flushing, Michigan/Flushing HS) topped the Flying Dutch with 13 points. Senior forward Courteney Barnes (Mokena, Illinois/Lincoln Way-Central) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds.
Hope tips off the MIAA Tournament on Monday, March 1 at home against Kalamazoo.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Hope College men’s basketball team concluded its 2021 regular season with an 83-62 win over the Kalamazoo College Hornets on the road on Saturday. With the victory, Hope improves to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA. Kalamazoo falls to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the league.
The MIAA Tournament now begins on Tuesday, March 2 at home against Adrian.
It took a little more than half of the first half for the Flying Dutchmen to establish command over the Hornets. Kalamazoo held two early five-point leads over Hope before the Flying Dutchmen tied the score at the 9:31 mark, 17-17.
The next basket by junior guard Tyler George of Ada (Forest Hills Central HS), pictured right, put Hope up for good. The closest Kalamazoo got to the Flying Dutchmen for the rest of the game was eight points at halftime, 37-29.
Hope scored 16 three-pointers for the game on 50% shooting from the arc, as George and sophomore guard Clayton Dykhouse of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS) knocked down four apiece.
Not surprising then, George and Dykhouse were Hope’s top scorers with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Midfielder Paige Wilmer and the Hope College women’s lacrosse team parlayed a big advantage in groundballs into a 15-7 victory over the Saint Mary’s College Belles at home on Saturday.
The Flying Dutch gathered twice as many groundballs as the Belles, 21-10, with Wilmer scooping up 11 of her own.
That upper hand allowed Hope to make every possession count against Saint Mary’s, resulting in more Flying Dutch shots, 33-29, and more shots on goal, 27-20.
The win, which counts as a non-conference victory, moves Hope’s record to 2-0 while the Belles drop to 1-1.
Wilmer (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington HS) and freshman Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan/Hartland) finished with five goals apiece.
