HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Hope College’s basketball teams will each have at least one more home game at DeVos Fieldhouse this season.
On Sunday, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced pairings for the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. On Monday, the Flying Dutch entertain the Kalamazoo Hornets, a team they have defeated by 81 and 74 points this winter, in a 7:30 PM tipoff, with broadcast time at 7:10 PM on 99 7/1450 WHTC.
On Tuesday, the Flying Dutchmen welcome the Adrian Bulldogs, a team they defeated by three points on the road last Thursday, in another 7:30 PM tipoff, with broadcast time at 7:10 PM on The Lakeshore’s 92 7 The Van. As a result, the scheduled Watervliet at Saugatuck boys’ basketball broadcast on The Van has been called off.
Unlike previous years, the league tournament seedings were based on a coaches’ poll instead of strictly results, since teams only had one MIAA game against each other, and some matchups (most notably Calvin men at Hope) were not played due to COVID 19 issues. In addition, the entire tournament will be held on individual campuses, based on the highest remaining seeds, instead of having the semifinals and finals at one venue.
The MIAA women’s tournament will be a Monday-Wednesday-Saturday affair, while the men’s tournament games will be on Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday. This will be the final week of the basketball campaign, regardless of the outcome, as the NCAA announced earlier this month that all Division III winter national championship tournaments have been called off due to a lack of schools competing in all sports.
Meanwhile, both of Grand Valley State’s basketball teams earned first-round byes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, with the Lakers in quarterfinal action at the same time – approximately 6 PM Eastern Time on Thursday for the men in Hammond, Indiana and the women in Westville, Indiana. Their opponents will be determined after first-round action on Tuesday night.
