SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Trailblazers it is.
That’s the nickname the Saugatuck Board of Education unanimously approved of during Monday night’s monthly meeting for the district’s athletic teams. It concludes a six-month-long effort to replace the long-standing “Indians” moniker that the district “retired” at the end of calendar 2020, due in part to concerns about the name being offensive to Native Americans.
Dr. Tim Travis, superintendent of Saugatuck Schools, was pleased that “Trailblazers” emerged among three finalists for the new nickname. “It is aspirational,” he said during a Tuesday appearance on “WHTC Morning News.” “I think it speaks to what we want for all of our students; the ability to form their own paths, make their own way. It also has a connotation of leading the way for others. It really describes what we hope for our students and the work that we do here.”
The “Trailblazers” name, which beat out the other two finalists “Lakers” and “Storm”, will be implemented immediately, with a design for a new logo slated by this fall.
