HOLLAND (WTHC-AM/FM) — Michigan DNR officials are looking for tips related to hundreds of tires dumped in Allegan County, discovered last week.
DNR officials were tipped off by an area resident who takes daily walks through the state game area, according to officials’ Facebook post.
That person spotted the first pile of more than 300 tires last Wednesday, and called the DNR’s Report All Poaching hotline. Those tires covered the park’s snowmobile trail No. 59, according to authorities.
Since that time, DNR officers estimate having located more than 500 tires and are continuing to find more, in and around the state game area as well as along roads between Allegan and Fennville.
Under Michigan law, each pile of tires can net the offender misdemeanor convictions and up to 180 days behind bars, a fine between $500 and $10,000, or both. If the culprit has previous convictions for tire dumping, they can face up to a year behind bars, fines between $1,000 to $25,000, or both — for each violation.
A person convicted under these state statutes may also be sentenced to up to 100 hours of community service.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the DNR’s Report All Poaching Hotline at (800) 292-7800. People can call or text 24/7 and remain anonymous.
