HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Nobody was hurt after a fire at a Holland’s South Side residence on Thursday night.
According to Captain of Fire Services Chris Tinney of the Holland Department of Public Safety, firefighters were dispatched to the residence on 34th Street east of Central Avenue at 8:42 PM on a report that a blaze broke out in the basement of the structure. “The first arriving firefighters from the city’s Waverly Road station reported a heavy smoke condition inside of the residence,” Tinney said in a department statement. “As additional firefighters arrived on the scene, crews were then able to enter the structure, confirm that all occupants were accounted for, locate the fire and quickly extinguish it.”
It appeared that a basement dehumidifier malfunctioned, igniting the flames. According to Tunney, a portion of that basement sustained significant smoke staining, and the smell of smoke permeated the entire residence, but the quick action by DPS crews limited the damage by the blaze itself, and that the residents should be able to return to the residence shortly. Early indications as to the cause of the fire was that the fire was unintentional in nature.
