HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — After an FDA advisory committee recommended Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine receive emergency use authorization, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) issued the following statement, emailed to media:
“I am so proud of the role Pfizer’s Portage location has played in making this day a reality. Southwest Michigan is literally helping to save the world, and we take tremendous pride in all of those Michiganders who have been and will continue to serve such a critical role in distributing this life-saving vaccine around the country and throughout the world,” Upton said. “This vaccine is essential to helping end the COVID-19 pandemic and restoring a sense of normalcy. While this is an exciting day, as folks await the vaccine, everyone should continue to follow the CDC guidelines and wear their masks, wash their hands, and avoid large crowds to help stop the spread.”
Several vaccines are on the brink of being approved by the FDA. Front line workers — in healthcare and public safety — will be first in line for the shots, following by people who are medically fragile, then the general public, according to state officials. Estimates as to when the general public will have access to the vaccines range from March through June, depending on supply and how the vaccines are deployed. Allegan County officials are asking for volunteers to help with vaccine administration as well as help with support services.
